How to Clean Carpets

For vacuuming, liquid spills and deep cleaning, various techniques can be used depending on the materials of your carpet.

Synthetic Carpets

First to vacuum. Use the beater brush, set to the pile height, to extract grit with several vacuum passes in different directions. Change the bag until the bag is half full, because after that, productivity decreases. When you deal with a liquid spill, use the blot technique to clean the area promptly: cover the area with a clean towel or a dense pad of paper towels. With the heel of your palm, press down. Until all the liquid has been absorbed, repeat using dry towels. If the spill is big, to remove most of the spill before blotting, use a wet-dry vacuum (if available).

Skilled steam cleaning works best on wall-to-wall carpeting that requires a thorough cleaning, and the warranty will require it. If you want to do it yourself, thoroughly vacuum it, then use a rental company extraction machine (supermarket models are less powerful). Until you start by pouring a few drops into a saucer and allowing it to evaporate, test the cleaning solution (a hair drier speed up the process). If the dried saucer residue remains sticky, turn to a cleaner. For drying the carpet, use fans or air-conditioning. Using the same techniques, area rugs can be swept.

Woolen Carpets

To vacuum, obey the directions above, but avoid using a rotary brush on a loop-pile (Berber) carpet; the yarn can become fuzzy. Using a floor tool instead. To clean liquid spills, begin by foaming with water and blotting, as you would for synthetic rugs. Never use ammonia or any other high-alkaline cleaner that can cause wool harm. Domestic cleaning is not recommended for deep cleaning of both surface rugs and wall-to-wall rugs, as wool fibers retain more water than synthetic fibers. This makes it difficult to dry them, and carpets in the region are very heavy and difficult to maneuver. In addition, many of the available cleaners are too alkaline for use on wool.

Plant-Based Fibers Carpets

Using the same method for vacuuming as for synthetic carpets. The easiest way to minimize grit is to use a beater cleaner, which creates unnecessary wear on these carpets. Even if they have been treated with a water repellent, plant fibers are less stain-resistant than synthetics or fur, so blot fluid spills promptly using the above-mentioned process. Using a fan or a hair drier (set on low heat) to ensure that damp areas dry quickly. As for deep cleaning, only dry methods are recommended by manufacturers. Professionals should be left with other approaches.
