How to Clean Your Handmade Rug?

An investment that will last for decades is buying a handmade rug. No other rug can be compared to an authentic, handmade woolen carpet. It's important that you feel comfortable looking after it properly because you have spent money and probably a lot of time looking for the right rug, so that it gives you nothing but joy.

In fact, handmade rugs are extremely durable, but this does not mean that you can throw them in the washing machine (please, don't!) or hose them outside. Many rugs have been dyed using natural colors, particularly vintage rugs, and as cool as this is (who doesn't prefer natural to chemical?) if they're saturated with water, the natural dyes will run.

So, what are you going to do when life shows up and your rug ends up with pasta tonight or the new find for your cat? I have written critical care instructions below for a handmade rug:

1. Simply vacuum your rug to sweep up dust, hair, crumbs ... anything else might have made its way on to your carpet for general cleanliness and regular maintenance. Each time you clean, be careful and stick to a "once over" rather than vacuuming vigorously over and over your rug.

Dampness: I've seen too many beautiful rugs stored in damp conditions and completely ruined, so make sure it's in a dry, clean area if you want to store your rug for any amount of time.

Fly’s: Again, I saw rugs destroyed by moths (for example, my grandfather's rug he purchased from Iran many years ago!). You may be tempted to hide your carpet in a corner of the room where no one is going to step over it or hang it on a wall. These choices are absolutely good, but bear in mind that if your rug is still sitting, it can be a nice place for moths to hang out and feed! Your carpet was built to live on: Know that tribal rugs have been used in tents, so don't be afraid to use your rug in your home's high traffic region. And if you want to have your carpet on a wall or in a corner, just make sure that every now and then you shake it up a little to prevent any moths from settling there.

2. For spills, make sure that you move quickly to keep the spill from falling into the carpet. Dampen a cloth with tepid water immediately, find some baby shampoo or suitable cleaner for the carpet and spot-clean the place. To raise the stain out, gently dab / rub the spot. As colors should flow, make sure that you do not pour water over your rug. If your carpet has some dirt on it, you could let it dry a little and then try to vacuum it up.

3. An additional tip: If you spill red wine on your carpet, surprisingly, white wine will help to quickly remove the stain. Wasting half a bottle of white wine for cleaning may seem a little expensive, but I can assure you, it's a lot cheaper than replacing your beautiful rug! Soak a cloth in white wine and dab / rug the area immediately before the stain lifts.

  1. Cleaning rugs can be little bit difficult, helpful post. Vacuum cleaners can clean it very well. It may also depend on the fibre of carpets, for example, cotton rugs and Wool Rug are cleaned differently. Thank you for sharing this.
