If a single piece of furniture is capable of defining the style of a personal living room, the sofa will be that piece. A sofa may be practical or whimsical, period or contemporary, single or sectional, available in a number of types — with a variety of functions. The sofa, as a signature object in each case, determines the space in which it sits.

Love Seats

A small chair, couch or lounge built for two people is a love seat. In the 17th and 18th centuries, love seats first appeared as large chairs designed more for the size of women's skirts at the time than for courtship rituals. These types of seats and sofas started to be sold under the names 'heart seat' and 'courting chair' in the 19th century. The seats were often designed in an S-shape to establish the illusion of a physical separation between the couple, to reinforce the concept of separation between the couple. The Tete-a-Tete sofa of Edward Wormley, with opposite backs and armrests on either side such that the sitters sat facing each other, may be one of the most radical examples of a love seat.

Chesterfields 

Chesterfield now defines sofas that are comfortable, typically upholstered in quilted leather, and detailed with a buttoned back, attributed to a piece of furniture commissioned by the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope. The name now denotes sofas, as well as over-stuffing or rolled arms, that contain some or all of these features.

Chaise Lounge

 

Literally, a chaise lounge is a long chair derived from the French one. In the 19th century, it first gained popularity, while hundreds of years ago, examples of similar types of daybeds can be found. Examples of a chaise lounge in the late 19th and early 20th centuries include a variety of variants created by Thonet and whimsical examples by several designers, including Eileen Gray. To the present day the chaise lounge remains a favorite type of sofa for designers.

Sectionals

 

A sofa sectional is modular. Typically, it comprises at least two sections that can be arranged in various configurations. A sectional sofa also has the option of choosing the location of the limb, with two or no sides, either left or right. A sectional sofa's main advantage is the ability to adapt its components to a number of spaces. While sectional sofas were produced as early as the Victorian period, until the mid-1950s, they did not become popular, and they continue to be refined to the present day.
